In 2009, those of you who lived in the village were aware that the fish in the Mere were dying. In 2008 the Mere was also rather smelly in the height of summer. The water in the Mere was drained off, leaving us with some interesting objects and a nasty, grey-black sludge whose contamination was probably the cause of the death of the fish. The sludge has now been removed to a better place - a tip on Burton Raikes. This excavation was completed by the end of the first week week in June. While the Mere was drained, the trees overhanging the water were cut back and minor repairs effected to the bank. The Mere was then re-filled with about 1.25 million gallons of water, leaving us with a fragrant pond that will support a number of fish in the future.
