The Driffield Times of May 6 1893 reported that on Wednesday morning at an early hour, a man engaged at work on the Mount Pleasant Farm at Bishop Burton, saw a pair of feet disappearing down a well on the farm.  He immediately gave an alarm and assistance was obtained, when it was ascertained that it was the tenant, Mr Charles Thompson, whose disappearance had been witnessed.  By means of the chain and bucket, he was hoisted to the surface and was found to be not much worse, although he was bruised in places and had been immersed in the water.  The well, it is said, is 70 feet deep.  How he got in is a mystery.
