The strange and inclement weather at the start of March also produced some strange local phenomena. The picture is of large circles in the melting ice on the Mere taken by Jean Armstrong. This phenomenon has been observed before on a larger scale by astronauts who captured pictures of giant circles in the Siberian icefield. This Russian giant circle or ice ring was viewed in 2009 and was 2.7 miles wide. Experts believe that these giant ice rings are created by methane emissions where a rising mass of warm water that begins swirling in a circular pattern because of the Coriolis force, or the phenomenon caused by the Earth's rotation that also helps create cyclones. However, they also appear in rivers or streams with clear water where methane doesn't play a part. This BBC web page on Youtube provides some insight into the process.
